Russian Patriarchate Choir of Moscow
Sponsored by Your South Florida Lexus Dealers
November 8 @ 8 p.m.
An ensemble of 12 male voices provides a richly majestic, eerie and transcendental musical experience. The group's concerts encompass two styles of immense creativity in Russian music: chants and prayers from the early 16th-century orthodox church and authentic closeharmony arrangements of Russian folk songs. Founded in the last decade of the Soviet government, the choir spent years decoding manuscripts of then-forbidden religious music. Since 1989, they have given the first performances of many works buried in obscurity for centuries. Their great musicological achievements have earned them a glorious place in the history of choral music, but it is the sheer beauty and intensity of the choir's singing that has won them great acclaim and devoted fans throughout the world.

South Florida Leads the Way in Technology

As further proof of the explosive growth and endless appeal of South Florida, an article on technology has just reported that the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area is Florida's largest technology hub, with 75,300 technology industry workers in 2005.

The Florida Cybercities 2007 report showed that the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area, which includes Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, had a high-tech payroll of $4.6 billion in 2005, the highest in the state, and high-tech firms employed 38 of every 1,000 private sector workers that year, the latest for which data was available.

Now, in addition to its position as a cultural, travel and financial center, South Florida can boast a new place as Florida’s largest technology hub.

Downtown Miami Hosts Film and Video Festival

The Rewind/Fast Forward Film and Video Festival, which kicks off its sixth edition today and runs through Sunday at the Miami-Dade Public Library Main Branch in downtown Miami, has never been like other film festivals. For one thing, all of the screenings are free. That's right: Gratis.

And although ''free'' often translates into ''We couldn't get anyone to pay for this, so we're giving it away,'' the Rewind/Fast Forward Film and Video Festival is actually one of Miami's best and most enjoyable celebrations of the cinematic arts, cramming an amazing amount of diversity, breadth and quality into three days.

Curated by Barron Sherer (who also programs Cinema Vortex, the excellent periodic festival of cult and rare movies), Rewind/ Fast Forward aims to celebrate Florida's cinematic heritage both in front of and behind the screen. Saturday afternoon's Miami Movie Makers Club is a celebration of the 40-year history of the rotating members of the organization, amateur filmmakers who turned their home and vacation movies into ambitious works of art.

For more information on the festival, including a complete schedule, visit http://www.fmia.org/.
